The proliferation of aerial image-capturing devices (drones) has popularized the use of aerial shots in audiovisual production at all levels. However current legislation prohibits the use of drones over audiences.

Current technology has managed to considerably reduce the weight of the components of a cablecam system, starting with the cable itself which now is 7 times lighter than steel. This considerably reduces the infrastructure as well as the time and the number of people required for its installation. As a result this means that the system and the transport costs are generally cheaper since the equipment packed and ready to travel does not exceed 100kg.

Overhead Filmworks have developed their own cablecam system with 2 premises: the first is to guarantee the safety of both the equipment as well as the people beneath the camera; and the second is to reach all levels of production.

All our instalations are certificated by the colleges of engineers guarantying the maximum security of the installation performed.

It can be used with any camera on the market (Alexa, Arri, Phantom, Broadcast TV). The use of zoom lenses and broadcast radiofrequency equipment allows Overhead Filmworks to broadcast huge events within the reach of very few such as large sports competitions or concerts, to a worldwide audience.

#2 SAFETY

Overhead Filmworks has fitted a Flyline cablecam dolly with a sophisticated platform of hardware and software designed by our engineering team, which makes the cablecam a safe option for any production.

Our control platform reports back to the software about the position of the dolly, as well as the tension of the cable, the strength of the wind, and other parameters required for its controlled operation. This system offers electronic brakes at two points of the cable pre-assigned by the operator .preset positions and a locking system that could be activated in case of radiofrequency failure.

The cable that the dolly runs along has a core of Dynema SK78 8mm with a Cordura cover that reduces the abrasion on the pulleys. It is 7 times lighter than a steel cable of a similar section, and 15 times stronger.

We have also added a redundant safety system of a second cable with the same characteristics, and all of the anchoring and tension systems are doubled up so that if the main system were to fail the trolley would remain suspended from the safety cable.

#3 EQUIPEMENT

DOLLY

Flyline re-engineered with a custom made platform. It reaches up to 60 km/h with an acceleration/deceleration control.
Our system comes with its own professional joystick and operates in the 400Mhz bandwidth.

GIMBAL

Artemis maxima X30 is currently the most powerful gimbal on the market and is able to stabilize cameras weighing up to 30 kg.
We have dispensed with the wireless 2.4 Ghz system and the pan tilt zoom and focus control operate in the 800 Mhz bandwidth.

CINEMA/FILM

We can work with any digital film camera, including the heaviest ones: Alexa XT, RED Misterium, Phantom Flex, etc. The system works very well in hi-speed recording because of the high velocity that the camera can reach.

Our control console communicates perfectly with the Canon 17-120 cineservo optics (PL or EF), which is highly recommendable when working with cablecam as it enables the operation of zoom and focus without additional motors.

CAMERA BROADCAST TV

For solutions in live TV environments/situations we have a Sony broadcast system made up of a 2/3″ HDC-P1 camera head, Canon HD 10×4.5 optics and a CCU Sony 750 control panel.

This system is equivalent to the Sony triax 1500 series cameras. The aim is for the cablecam camera to be the same as the other cameras in a OB truck or studio.

RF BROADCAST SYSTEM

Even though some very cheap solutions for wireless video transmission have recently appeared, these systems are designed for monitoring.

We work with a Vislink L1500 broadcast system, with LMS-T modulation, camera control module and 4 diversity downconverters.

Overhead Filmworks is part of the F4 studio group, made up of a number of companies dedicated to technical production services.

At our premises in the Prado del Espino business park in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid) we have storage spaces, offices and a 500m2 studio for demonstrations and tests.

Through the other companies that make up the group we can offer all types of camera, optics and accessories for use with the cablecam.

Raúl Vaquero
Founding partner

Cameraman and director of photography with 18 years experience in the field of documentaries, television and advertising. He has worked in over 70 countries, his images reporting on all types of current affairs and events: politics, sports, natural history, and has had the opportunity to work with broadcasters such as the BBC, CNN, National Geographic, the Arts Channel and the History Channel, and television programmes such as Documentos TV and La Noche Temática.
He has also been director of photography for numerous advertising campaigns.

José Boyer
Founding partner

Director of photography and cameraman with 25 years of experience in TV, specializing in hot heads, hi-speed cameras. He has worked as a freelancer for the main national and international TV channels, especially 14 years in the broadcasting team for Canal+ Sports and 16 years in Dorna covering the Moto GP World Championships all over the world.

Carlos del Olmo
Engineer

IT and systems engineer with 20 years experience, specializing in wireless communications and embedded systems.

Java developer and a partner of Borak Development, he has extensive experience in Broadcast TV systems.

Julián Rodríguez Pardo
Production

Head of production at Antena 3 TV for over 20 years, he has been in charge of production of different formats including news, special programming, sports and music broadcasts, drama series, etc.

Among the many programmes he has produced are Rock in Rio, the Goya Awards, UEFA Champions League, etc.

David Sánchez
Safety and installation

30 years working with cables, specializing in ice and rock climbing. 10 years experience as a technician on vertical jobs. He has given courses on altitude rescue to volunteer firefighters.

Expert in fire prevention and TD2 sports technician. In charge of installation and safety of the lines at Overhead Filmworks.
